Kastellorizo

Kastellorizo is one of Greece’s most charming and remote islands.

Kastellorizo (also called Megisti) is a small island located in the southeastern Aegean, just 2 km off the Turkish coast (near Kaş). It’s known for its colorful neoclassical houses, crystal-clear waters, peaceful atmosphere, and fascinating history. Despite its size, it’s packed with charm and culture.

 Main Town

The harbor town of Kastellorizo is the island’s heart. It’s a semicircular port lined with brightly painted houses, small cafes, and tavernas. You can easily explore it on foot in a day — but it’s even better to take your time and enjoy its slow rhythm.

Don’t miss:

  • The waterfront promenade – perfect for sunset strolls.
  • The Archaeological Museum – housed in a restored neoclassical building with ancient artifacts and local history.
  • The Church of St. Constantine and St. Helen – the island’s main church, with a majestic bell tower.

 Top Sights & Experiences

1. The Blue Cave (Galazia Spilia)
One of Greece’s most spectacular sea caves. You can only reach it by small boat early in the morning when the sea is calm — the sunlight filters through the water, illuminating the cave in glowing blue light. Magical!

2. The Castle of the Knights (Castello Rosso)
The island’s namesake (“Kastellorizo” = Red Castle). Climb up for panoramic views of the harbor and the Turkish coast.

3. Lycian Tomb
A unique 4th-century BC tomb carved into the rock above the harbor — a rare example of Lycian architecture outside mainland Turkey.

4. Mandraki Bay
A smaller, quieter harbor perfect for swimming and relaxed meals by the sea.

5. The Monastery of St. George on the Mountain
A scenic hike (or drive partway) rewards you with sweeping views over the island and the sea.

 Food & Drink

Popular spots include Lazarakis, Athena Fish Tavern, and To Paragadi along the waterfront.

 Swimming & Relaxation

While there aren’t big sandy beaches, the crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming right off the rocks.
