Nisyros

Nisyros is a small volcanic island located between Kos and Tilos in the southeastern Aegean Sea. With its dramatic landscapes, charming whitewashed villages, and authentic Greek atmosphere, it’s a peaceful alternative to the busier nearby islands.

Highlights

The Volcano

The island’s centerpiece — an active (but dormant) volcano with a huge caldera about 4 km wide.

You can walk inside the Stefanos crater, where you’ll see steaming fumaroles and smell the sulfur.

Visit the Volcano Museum in Nikia for fascinating geological exhibits.

Mandraki

The main port and capital of Nisyros, built amphitheatrically along the coast.

Wander through labyrinthine alleys, admire neoclassical mansions, and enjoy a sunset by the sea.

Don’t miss the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani, perched above the town on a rock.

Nikia

A stunning mountain village on the rim of the caldera.

The Porta Square, paved with pebbles and surrounded by traditional houses, is one of the prettiest in Greece.

Incredible panoramic views of the crater and the sea.

Emborios

Another beautiful village, partly abandoned but atmospheric.

Visit the “Volcanic Sauna”, a natural steam cave used since ancient times.

Pali

A fishing village with a small marina and hot springs nearby.

Ideal for quiet swims and fresh seafood.

Beaches

Nisyros is rocky, but there are several lovely swimming spots:

Lies Beach – long, sandy, and tranquil.

Pachia Ammos – accessible by foot or boat; wild and beautiful.

Hohlaki Beach – near Mandraki, with dark volcanic pebbles.

 Culture & Events

The island celebrates the Panagia Spiliani Festival on August 15, with music, food, and dancing.

There’s also a growing art scene, with residencies and exhibitions hosted by Sterna Nisyros Residencies.

 Getting There

Ferry from Kos (1 hour) or directly from Piraeus (approx. 13 hours).

Day trips are available from Kos and Tilos.

No airport — that’s part of its charm!

 Travel Tips

Rent a scooter or small car to explore villages and crater roads.
